Are Back Supports effective?

26 Jan

Back pain is a common problem that affects many people, and it can be caused by a variety of factors, including disc disease / problems. The use of back support belts has been a popular solution for individuals suffering from lower back pain, however, some professionals argue that it may not be the best approach. We at the Spine Health Centre, through years of experience, tend to favour their use for the initial onset of a low back problem, especially if there is a disc bulge or degenerative disc disease. Long term use is definitely not the answer.

Benefits of Wearing a Back Support Belt

Provides Extra Support:

Wearing a back support belt can provide extra support to the lower back, helping to reduce the strain on the spine and alleviate pain caused by spinal disc problems.

Improves Posture:

A back support belt can help to improve posture by pulling the shoulders back and keeping the spine in a neutral position. This can help to reduce the pressure on the discs and alleviate pain.

Increases Stability:

Wearing a back support belt can increase stability in the lower back, helping to reduce the risk of injury and further pain.

Enhances Healing and Recovery:

A back support belt can help to speed up the healing process and reduce recovery time following a spinal disc injury.

Can be worn during daily activities:

A back support belt is lightweight and comfortable to wear, and it can be worn during daily activities such as sitting, standing, and walking.

Drawbacks of Wearing a Back Support Belt

Dependence:

Some professionals argue that the use of a back support belt can lead to a dependency on the device, causing individuals to neglect other important aspects of managing their condition such as exercise and proper lifting techniques.

Reduced muscle strength:

Prolonged use of back support belts may lead to weakened muscles in the lower back and abdominal area, as the muscles are not being used as much as they should be.

Not a substitute for proper treatment:

Wearing a back support belt should not be considered as a substitute for proper treatment, such as physical therapy or medication, and it should only be used as a temporary measure to alleviate pain.

Conclusion

The net benefit of using a back support in the first few weeks of sever back pain out-weigh the drawbacks. As discussed, a back support can provide numerous benefits for those suffering from disc problems, including providing extra support, improving posture, increasing stability, and enhancing healing and recovery.

Ideally, they should be used in conjunction with the support of a physical therapist who can give you an effective diagnosis and management plan for your problem.
