There are several reasons for headaches. Most are not serious and once the cause is established headaches can often be helped by simple changes in lifestyle. One cause can be tension or strain in the muscles and joints of the neck and upper back.
Gentle massage to the tight muscles of base of skull combined with manipulation of spinal joints of the neck and upper back can resolve the build-up of muscular and joint tension that may lead to headaches.
As osteopaths, we can advise you on exercise and lifestyle changes and offer guidance on simple changes to your posture when at work or driving which also help. Small changes can collectively lead to big results!
In the neck, there are small arteries that run through the cervical spine and enter into the base of the brain via the major opening called the foramen magnum.
If the upper cervical spinal joints get irritated this can affect these arteries and cause them to constrict which can cause dizziness. It can also happen when there is arthritis of the neck and as you look up or to the side you start to get dizzy or giddy. This is called vertebro basilar insufficiency (VBI). If you have these symptoms alone then osteopathic treatment can help by improving upper neck movement, thus freeing off these blood vessels.
Dizziness can also be caused by restricted blood to the base of the brain due to atherosclerosis - fatty deposits, this will need to be checked out fully with your GP.
You can also suffer from temporary loss of blood to base of brain due to change in position of head or neck or stress, this is a common condition and again osteopathy can help with this. A typical example may be an older person goes to the hair dresser and lies back on the wash-basin for a while, afterwards/later she or he gets dizziness and or headaches. This is a common cause of onset.
We have a great deal of experience at the Spine Health Centre in managing this type of problem, if it is due to mechanical / stress problems
rather than artery disease due to cholesterol/fat build up.
